THE NEED TO KNOW MOVIE SOURCE LIST Compiled by: Betsy Mayfield 515-232-8862 Fax: 515-232-1182 Updated: March 23, 2003 New Film Releases Two New Videos THE LONGING Following the horrific events of World War II, Jewish immigration to Palestine intensified. In 1948, after months of fighting which included the British, Zionists Jordanians and Palestinians, Israel became a state. In the process, more than 400 Palestinian villages were destroyed, and 750,000 Palestinians became refugees. While World War II and Israeli stories have been widely available in the West, we have not heard many stories of the Palestinian experience. The stories presented here are based on oral history interviews with those who lived through the events of 1948, and with Palestinians and Jews who are trying to build a just peace in Israel and Palestine. This video (30 minutes long. VHS) is part of a larger project. Two scenes have been adapted for video from a full-length play, The Longing, which has been performed twenty times from Chicago to Atlanta. The play and the video are based on oral history interviews recorded by Dr. Robert Hostetter from 1998-2000. To tell these profound stories of longing and working for a just peace, Host Productions and HMS Media (Second to None, and Steppenwolf Theatre: Twenty-Five Years on the Edge) have used an imaginative combination of dramatic scenes, interviews. and documentary footage. The goal of the video project is to complete a 57-minute production for public television, home and educational settings.
