New Film Releases

Two New Videos

Norman Finkelstein speaking on the Palestine-Israel conflict, and "Israel's War Crimes: Illustrated by Videotape Shot by the International Solidarity Movement" are the subjects of two new videos by Grassroots Action Videos, of Ann Arbor, MI.  Professor Finkelstein was videotaped during a lecture at the University of Michigan on March 11, speaking to a largely Palestinian audience. He is the author of "The Holocaust Industry," "Image and Reality of the Israel-Palestine Conflict," and "The Rise and Fall of Palestine: A Personal Account of the Intifada Years."  In this videotape, Finkelstein presents a scathing analysis of Israeli policies toward Palestinians living in the Occupied Territories, a call to support the divestment campaign, and a hopeful assessment of the anti-war activism exhibited by citizens around the world. This video is available now and can be ordered on-line at:
http://www.freepalestinecampaign.org/video_descriptions-1.htm

The video of Prof. Finkelstein is the ninth in our series, which also includes presentations by Kathy Kelly, Ilan Pappe and Diane Butto, Hussein Ibish, Adam Shapiro and Huwaida Arraf, Ali Abunimah
debating Morton Klein, and others.

John Reece's excellent presentation on the environmental damage caused by the Occupation is the next project we should complete in the next two weeks. Using his pictures and narration, and some
footage shot by the ISM, this will be a powerful video. Other projects we're currently working on are speeches given by Phyllis Bennis, Naim Ateek, and Hussein Ibish.

I'm also working on a project entitled, "Israel's War Crimes: Illustrated by Videotape Shot by the International Solidarity Movement." It will be a straightforward listing of specific articles
from the Fourth Geneva Convention and other international laws governing proper treatment of occupied people and civilians in conflict, and uses footage shot by volunteers of the International
Solidarity Movement to illustrate how Israeli has violated them, and, therefore, committed war crimes. This videotape presents 7 of  these war crimes, and includes information on how US citizens can
learn more about international law and efforts to bring Israeli leaders such as Ariel Sharon to justice.
This video will be available on-line in a few weeks.

Please support our project!

THE LONGING
By:  Robert Hostetter

Following the horrific events of World War II, Jewish immigration to Palestine intensified. In 1948, after months of fighting which included the British, Zionists Jordanians and Palestinians, Israel became a state. In the process, more than 400 Palestinian villages were destroyed, and 750,000 Palestinians became refugees.

While World War II and Israeli stories have been widely available in the West, we have not heard many stories of the Palestinian experience. The stories presented here are based on oral history interviews with those who lived through the events of 1948, and with Palestinians and Jews who are trying to build a just peace in Israel and Palestine.

This video (30 minutes long. VHS) is part of a larger project. Two scenes have been adapted for video from a full-length play, The Longing, which has been performed twenty times from Chicago to Atlanta. The play and the video are based on oral history interviews recorded by Dr. Robert Hostetter from 1998-2000.

To tell these profound stories of longing and working for a just peace, Host Productions and HMS Media (Second to None, and Steppenwolf Theatre: Twenty-Five Years on the Edge) have used an imaginative combination of dramatic scenes, interviews. and documentary footage.

The goal of the video project is to complete a 57-minute production for public television, home and educational settings. To support the project or for more information, please contact:

Des Moines, Iowa, The Need To Know Film Consortium’s first festival was held last September. In addition to Exodus, The Women Next Door (Women Make Movies), Promises and Tale of Three Jewels, this festival featured Chicago film maker and resident artist at Columbia College, Chicago, Brigid Maher’s ADRIFT IN THE HEART LAND available through email contact: bmaher@popmail.colum.edu.

EXODUS Otto Preminger’s influential 1960's film based on the book by Leon Uris, merits another look 40 years after the making. With Paul Newman, Eva Marie Saint and Sal Mineo, this film provides excellent insight in the way Americans were taught to think about one of the most intractable conflicts of our time. Available through www.reel.com or other online movie stores.
